My Major and Career Path

I am going to school to obtain my bachelor's in kinesiology with a major in exercise science on a pre-physical therapy track. I chose this career path based on several life experiences. I was a student-athlete from middle school through high school, and greatly enjoyed my time in volleyball and swim. Spending seven years as an athlete meant that I'd dealt with my fair share of injuries. I was always interested in the ability to heal an injury without needing invasive methods, by correcting and reteaching proper body mechanics. That was a big part of what inspired me to start on the path I am on now, along with many other factors.

As a child, I always knew I wanted to go into the medical field, and my experience with athletics helped push me toward physical therapy. It is a profession that has many subcategories and allows me to be hands on. Being able to help people gain strength is an important factor in preventing injuries, speeding up the healing process, and obtaining full functionality. Being a part of this process is something I have loved in athletics and am passionate about continuing in my career. My major of exercise science is the best one I could think of to prepare me for this career. It includes almost all of the prerequisites for physical therapy school and material that familiarizes students with the fields that are surrounding physical therapy.

My Career Goals

My primary goal at this time is getting into physical therapy school. I hope to find a specialty during professional school. After graduating, I would like to get a job in an acute rehab setting. I've worked in an outpatient setting as a rehabilitation aide and have loved doing so, but it has led me to believe that I would prefer to work in an acute setting. Working as a physical therapist will allow me to follow my passion and help patients to recover and live functional and pain-free lives.
